Fun and Creative Homemade Valentine’s Day Cards for Kids

Valentine’s Day is always on February 14. It is believed that Valentine’s Day came to be when a priest by the name of St. Valentine married couples and was imprisoned for it. The reason why was in the Roman Empire many young men were needed as soldiers, but that being engaged or married would make the men stay home instead of going off to fight wars.

Therefore marrying and getting engaged became illegal. St. Valentine had a soft heart and felt for the young couples so he defied the laws, was imprisoned and unfortunately sentenced to death. But the sentiment lived on and St. Valentine was immortalized for his kind heart and good deeds. Today Valentine’s Day is celebrated with the giving of cards, flowers and chocolates to show one another how much they mean to us. Children have the most fun making homemade cards for one another.

Homemade Styrofoam Heart Print Cards

What you will need:

  • newspaperPencil
  • poster Paint
  • sponge
  • flat piece of hard Styrofoam
  • scissors
  • rolling pin
  • white construction paper

What to do:

  1. Cover the table with newspaper.
  2. Fold the construction paper in half to make a card.
  3. Cut the Styrofoam the size and shape of the card.
  4. Press hard when you draw a heart or hearts on the Styrofoam with the pencil.
  5. Sponge paint all over the Styrofoam.
  6. Put the card on top of the drawing on the Styrofoam.
  7. Roll the rolling pin over the paper.
  8. Take off and let dry.

Homemade Lollipop Cards

What you will need:

  • round lollipops
  • stapler
  • red pipe cleaners
  • red construction paper
  • decks of playing cards
  • black marker

What to do:

  1. Separate all the heart cards and set aside. You will be using these.
  2. Cut arms and legs from the pipe cleaners.
  3. Place the hands and legs between two cards and staple in place.
  4. Cut a heart for a head out of the construction paper.
  5. Draw a face on the heart with the marker and staple to the card.
  6. Cut a smaller heart out of the construction paper.
  7. Write the name of the person you are giving the card to.
  8. Poke this heart onto the end of the pipe clean arm and fold end so it stays on.
  9. Wrap the other pop cleaner arm around the lollipop. Make sure it is secured on tight.
  10. Bend the bottom of the pop cleaner legs so they look like feet.

It is pretty easy to go out and buy valentines cards and if you don’t have the time, which in this day and age is very possible, stick with this plan. But if you do have some extra time on your hands and both you and your child love getting creative try out these homemade Valentine’s Day cards. They will certainly be as much fun making as giving away on Valentine’s Day.
